First Edition
First edition of this famous dictionary on 18th-century trade and commerce, vast in scope, including a mass of detail on the international trading system and illustrated with 24 maps of various parts of the world. The work is notable for including the earliest published appearance of part of Cantillon's Essai sur la nature du commerce en général, a founding text of economic science. As stated in the title, much of the work constitutes a translation of Jacques Savary des Bruslons's Dictionnaire universel de Commerce, published posthumously in 1723. However, it is so greatly expanded, and incorporates so many other sources, as to very much constitute its own work. Most notably, as part of his source material Postlethwayt apparently used an English manuscript copy of Cantillon's Essai sur la nature du commerce en général. The Universal Dictionary contains lengthy extracts from Cantillon's Essai without attribution. The Essai was not published until 1755, after the greater part of Postlethwayt's Universal Dictionary had been published in numbers: as a consequence this marks the effective first publication of much of Cantillon's Essai in any language (see Murphy, p. xvi). Postlethwayt's considerable additions to the work of Bruslons and Cantillon concentrate on matters relevant to Britain and its Empire. Much of Postlethwayt's writings (he also wrote several pamphlets on the African trade) focus on the financial condition of the country from the standpoint of seeking its improvement. He writes, "This work is designed throughout to raise the spirit of universal art and industry in this nation, that the labour and ingenuity of our people, being inferior to those of no other state and empire, the kingdom may not dwindle into poverty and ignominy; and from being the greatest nation in the world, we may not become the least and the most contemptible" (preface). "It therefore contained many practical articles on inventions and improvements, as well as on commercial practice such as banking, commercial bills, and customs house business, hence catering for the considerable interest in compendia of knowledge of the mid-eighteenth century. This last enthusiasm was also evident in Postlethwayt's proposal for a remodelled Royal Society to enable it to collect information useful to British trade as well as to recommend new manufactures and new avenues of trade for official encouragement and support" (ODNB). Goldsmiths' 8594; Higgs 11; Kress 5157; McCulloch, pp. 52. Antoin E. Murphy, introduction to Richard Cantillon's Essay on the Nature of Trade in General, 2015. 2 volumes, folio (419 x 256 mm). Contemporary calf, rebacked with red and green morocco labels, new endpapers. Frontispiece, 24 folding maps and 26 folding tables. Each volume bound without leaf giving directions to binder. Covers a little rubbed, light staining at foot throughout, vol. I leaves 7B2 and 7C1 restored at fore edge (not affecting text). A very good copy.
