OR WHISPERINGS OF AN OLD PINE BY JOSEPH BATTELL "Here the ineffable SECOND EDITION, REVISED AND ENLARGED VOLUME I. AMERICAN PUBLISHING COMPANY MIDDLEBURY, VERMONT GAY & BIRD 22 BEDFORD STREET, STRAND LONDON 1903 PREFACE TO SECOND EDITION. HE second edition of "Ellen," revised and enlarged to two THE volumes, would have appeared last year but for the author's time being entirely engrossed in politics, connected with the recent agitation of temperance in Vermont. A lull having come to this contest, this edition of "Ellen" is brought out. The independent positions of the first edition in regard to the nature of matter, and the phenomena of sound, light, heat, electricity, etc., founded upon the universality of natural law, have been nowhere answered; but, on the contrary, are being endorsed and accepted by all of the more advanced physicists and scientists. And yet they were entirely revolutionary. For they demonstrated that the undulatory theories, taught in every text book of physics, were absurd and impossible; and that the Newtonian theory of matter, as expressed, although in harmony with mathematics, was, to say the least, very misleading. The undulatory theories are still taught in all schools and colleges, because there is nothing else to teach; but there is no sensible person, who has kept abreast of recent discoveries in cathode and X ray light and in radium, who does not know that they are wholly false. |
