PREFACE

TO THE COMPUTIST'S MANUAL OF FACTS, AND MERCHANT'S AND MECHANIC'S CALCULATOR AND GUIDE.

IN presenting this work to the public, it may, perhaps, be proper to add, that it has been designed mainly for the practical man. It will be found to contain a vast amount of Numerical, Arithmetical and Mathematical Facts, data, formulas, and rules, pertaining to a variety of subjects, and applicable to a diversity of ends, as well as much information of a more general nature, valuable to the artisan and commercial classes.

The facts and data alluded to are by no means claimed as new, nor is it pretended that, to any considerable extent, they are now for the first time made public; but it has been thought that hitherto they have existed in a manner too generally inaccessible to meet the immediate wants and emergencies of those to whom they are more directly of worth.

They have been gathered, with much care and patience, from a great variety of sources, both oral and printed; and, where a discrepancy of opinion has been found to exist, as has sometimes been the case, they have been arrived at, as far as practicable, by instituting comparisons with known and accredited truths. The care that has been taken in this respect, it is thought, should secure for this particular department reliance and trust.
