Sum 32.--If ten hens were to lay 30 egg each in a month, how many would they lay in all ? Here if you were to put down thirty eggs for the first hen, and thirty for the second, and so on to the tenth, you would find the answer by addition; but as multiplication is a short way of doing addition, you must multiply the large sum by the small one, and you will find the answer. Sum 33.-Some cruel boys went out to steal some poor birds' nests, and found 16 nests with six eggs in each; how many eggs did they take in all ? If the numbers in each nest were not equal, the sum must be done by addition. Sum 34.--Sixty minutes make an hour, how many minutes then are there in nine hours? Sum 35.--Sixty seconds make a minute, how many seconds are there in ten minutes? Sum 36.-Twenty-four hours make a day and night, how many hours are there in five days and nights? Sum 37.--There are seven days in a week, and twenty-four hours in each day and night, how many hours are there then in a week? Sum 38.-Nine little boys went into a man's orchard to get apples; they filled their hats and run off. When they counted their apples, they found that each boy had just 15 apples; how many apples did they take in all? Sum 39.--Jane was a good girl, and when she was four years old, she could read very well; so her mamma gave her a new book. She read just 17 pages a day, and in 7 days she finished her book; how many pages were there in her book? Sum 40.-A man rode 45 miles a day for five days; how many miles did he ride in all? DIVISION. DIVISION is the separating of two or more things in any equal parts; in other words, it will tell us how many times a small number is to be found in a great one. Thus if you wish to know how many times 3 there are in 12, you will find by division that there are 4 times 3 in twelve. Make twelve marks, thus, III, III, III, III, 1 2 3 4 then count off three and make a comma, then three more and make another comma, and so on through all, then count the commas, and you will find there are four of them. |
