March 2013-The article on "Smitty" and Martha Smith and Smitty's Harley Davidson was absolutely fantastic. I had the great opportunity to meet them in 1978 when Smitty approached me after a race in Lima, Ohio and told me that I should stop by his shop next week. It was a bit of a drive from my home in Massillon, Ohio but I got there about 5pm on a Wednesday. Smitty took me on a brief tour of the shop then asked if I wanted to go run some errands with him. What Smitty called running errands turned out to be me driving him to Carl Patrick's house in Ohio to pick up some parts, then to Fergie's shop to drop some parts off. After a bite to eat we headed to Flint Michigan to drop off and pick up some more parts from Tex Peel. Aftewards I drove Smitty back to Moundsville WVa so that he could go to work at Marx Toys. All of this was so that Smitty could get the best stuff available for his racers. After this I was one of Smitty's racers and enjoyed his support. Smitty made sure that I never lacked what I needed for the next race. And Martha became a surrogate Grandmother to my 3 year old son. I truley loved them as family and will aways have fond memories of them and my years racing out of their shop.
