37. 1. WHAT is understood by one half, one third, one fourth, one fifth, &c.?

ANS. When a number or thing, as a unit or an apple, is divided into two equal parts, each of the parts is called one half; when into three equal parts, each of the parts is called one third; two of the parts are called two thirds, &c.

ANALYSIS. Since in 1 there are 2 halves, in 4 there are 4 times 2 halves, or 8 halves. Therefore there are 8 halves in 4.
