PREFACE

HAVING for a long time sustained considerable inconvenience from the want of a book of Arith retical Tables adapted to the capacities of very young pupils, and arranged in such a manner as to answer the purposes of a large school, I have been induced to compile one, with a special view to the necessities of the system of monitorial instruction.

Believing it important that children should be made to understand the application of what they are required to commit to memory, I have placed a few simple questions at the end of each lesson illustrating its use; and as a knowledge of the rules of Arithmetic can be well understood by children, only by performing the operations, I have endeavored, in the introduction, to make the rules as concise as possible, depending principally on the examples for fixing them in the minds of the pupils. It is confidently hoped that this little work will lighten the labor of the child in committing to memory that which is so important as a foundation for Arithmetic, and also that, by the division and numbering of the lessons, it may relieve the teacher of much trouble in assigning the proper portions for each scholar or class.

That it may, however small the offering, aid the cause of infant education, is the earnest wish of
