A Drill for Speed and Accuracy

Have the above numbers copied on the blackboard.

23.48-17 Let pupils, one at a time, go to board and read (men5.90-14 tally) the sum of the figures in each number, from 73.84-22 left to right, putting results down as rapidly as possi6.95-20 ble. Keep a record of the time. Add two seconds for every mistake. The entire number should be taken in at a glance and the sum put down almost instantly. This is an excellent drill for concentration. Pupils at seats copy numbers and "check" their results by the results on the blackboard.

Place this form on the blackboard, or on a large card hung upon the wall. Enter all names at the beginning. Permit children to come and ask for a test in any topic before or after school or at other times designated by the teacher. Check the topic as soon as a perfect test has been made.

The above record shows that Sidney Sands has made perfect tests in Multiplication Table, Multiplication by Three Figures, and Reduction of Mixed Numbers.

This plan promotes friendly rivalry, fixes responsibility upon the pupil, and encourages pupils to overcome one difficulty at a time. When one list is completed, add other topics, or begin a new one. It is well to start with a small list.

By reference to the blank spaces, both teacher and pupil may see at a glance where the pupil's weak spots are, and where "individual" work is necessary. Always provide some very easy topics, so that the poorest scholar may make a start.

What an Account Is

Everyone should keep an exact record of the money which he receives for wages, and from all other sources. He should also keep a record of the money expended. Such a record, showing money received and money expended, is an account.
