To write thousands.

Draw a perpendicular line, and on the left of the line write the thousands, and on the right the hundreds, tens, and ones; thus, twenty thousand seven hundred and fourteen

When numbers can be written without difficulty, the line should be left out and a comma put in its place.

To be learnt by heart.

When thousands are written, there must always be three figures after them.

When millions are written, there must always be after them one set of three figures for thousands, and another set of three figures for units.

As a further exercise in numeration, decimal fractions can be written, but a clear idea of a fraction must first be obtained.

Numeration is the art of reading numbers.

To read any number.

Begin at the right-hand figure and count off 3 figures; draw a line after them and write over them, Units. Count off three more figures, draw another line, and write over

them, Thousands. Write Millions over the remaining

figures.

Always draw the two lines, as above, and write Millions, Thousands, Units. Put all the Millions in their proper place, Thousands in theirs, and Units in theirs.

Addition is the method of adding numbers together.

Arrange them properly-ones under ones and tens under tens. Then, beginning at the right-hand side, say six ones and two ones are eight ones; put 8 in the ones' place. Next, four tens and five tens are nine tens; put nine in the tens' place. The answer shows that fifty-two and forty-six are ninetyeight.

Place t properly first; then, say nine ones and five ones are fourteen ones, that is, four ones and one ten; put the 4 in the ones' place, and carry the 1 ten to the tens.
