A little caution at this juncture might have been of the utmost importance to the subsequent tran quillity of the province, but the stubborn perse verance of the party awoke the suspicion of the country, who could not reconcile the overbearing spirit which the former had exhibited in the pre sent instance, with the freedom of the new consti tution. From this period, and probably from this circumstance; parties assumed a distinct character.
