THE study of the modern languages has during the last few years entered upon a new stage of development in English Schools, and been thoroughly revolutionised by the progress of modern science. The natural consequence of this movement was at once to supersede the time-honoured grammars of Hamel, Lévizac, Wanostrocht, &c. ; even Noël and Chapsal had to relinquish their claims, and a general demand sprang up for new educational works in connection with the teaching, more particularly, of French. It is for the purpose of meeting this desideratum that Messrs.
