PREFACE

THIS book provides a year's work in the arithmetic of modern business. All topics which have no other claim for inclusion than that of tradition have been omitted and no topic is included unless it has a legitimate place in modern business practice. Topics which have acquired importance recently because of changes in the organization and conduct of business are included. Among the topics so included are Contract Purchases and Installment Payments, Depreciation, Advertising, Insolvency and Bankruptcy, Comparative Statistics to Promote Buying and Selling Efficiency, Profit and Loss by Departments, Finding the Profit and Loss on Each Sale, Factory Costs, and Tabulations for the Sales Manager.

The illustrations and model forms were chosen to acquaint the student with actual business conditions. The problems were selected from those which actually arise in important business activities, and the methods of solution are those which are used in business practice. Many of the drill exercises are put in ruled forms such as will be met in the business world; and the student is given practice in the art of presenting business statistics and other material in a neat, concise, and attractive manner. The traditional sequence of topics has been abandoned in some cases in favor of a grouping of topics in which there is a relation of business experience.

The necessity for a high degree of accuracy and facility in arithmetical computation has been fully recognized. Abundant material for practice and drill in the fundamental processes is provided. The student is required frequently to check his results in order to form the habit of checking, so necessary in business, and numerous exercises to be finished within a time limit are included to improve speed in computation. Since business expediency demands that many problems shall be solved orally, a large amount of oral work has been included.

Each chapter of the book is adequately motivated. The material is so presented that the student sees the business need for each process, and numerous practical problems based on actual business conditions and practices of today are found in every chapter. The problems chal

lenge the interest of the student because they portray actual business situations. The material of the book is not experimental. Its value is vouched for by the enthusiastic testimony of scores of business men who have examined it with care, and by thousands of students who have been prepared in business arithmetic by the use of the earlier editions of this text.

From the point of view of both material and method this book is based on actual business conditions and practices, not on theory. The ruled forms and the tabulated business statistics so extensively used in the book have demonstrated their effectiveness in aiding in the development of rapidity, accuracy, and neatness. Many specialists in various business and industrial activities were consulted, and the statements of business customs, as well as the tabulation of materials and the selection and arrangement of problems, are based on the practices of the day.

The authors wish to acknowledge their indebtedness to the numerous teachers and business men who have aided them by offering valuable suggestions and discriminating criticisms, and by furnishing materials.
